LESSON 29
A MEDLEY
TEXT: II Peter 3:18
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
INTRODUCTION
1. This lesson is a medley of topics loosely related to teaching the congregation how to help visitors find their way to God.
A. Assumptions
1. The Spirit of God is for and available to everyone.
“On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit’” (Acts 1:4–5).
“The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:39).
2. There is no mention of an altar in the New Testament.
a. However the concept of an altar is alluded to:
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:1–2).
“I die every day—I mean that, brothers” (I Corinthians 15:31).
3. It is the will of God for us to reach people for Him.
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10).
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20).
I. HOW THEY RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST
A. They Waited
“They all joined together constantly in prayer” (Acts 1:14).
1. Many have found it necessary to wait in prayer to prepare themselves for receiving the Holy Ghost.
2. Individuals sometimes allow obstacles to stand in their way of receiving the Spirit.
a. Weakness of faith or doubt
b. Fears
c. Pride
d. Love of the world
3. Some people genuinely fear receiving the Holy Ghost.
4. Some have a fear of not being able to live a Christian life.
5. Some fear speaking in tongues as not being of God.
“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him” (Luke 11:9–13).
6. Some fear fabrication.
